Most businesses reach a point where the software they bought no longer fits the way they work. The signs are familiar: a spreadsheet that sits alongside the "real" system because the real system cannot do one critical thing, data re-keyed between tools because nothing talks to anything else, and a handful of people who are the only ones who know the workarounds.

Custom software is the answer when that gap has become expensive — when the cost of the workarounds, the errors they cause and the time they absorb is larger than the cost of building something that fits. It is not the answer when a configured off-the-shelf product would do, and we will say so if that is what we find.

How we go about it

We start by mapping the process as it actually exists today, including the workarounds — those are usually where the real requirements hide. What people do in spite of the software tells you more than what the software was supposed to do.

From there we agree what to build first, and just as importantly what not to build. Most systems have a small core that carries the majority of the value; shipping that early gets it in front of real users while the rest is still cheap to change. We work in short cycles against a staging environment you can open at any time, so progress is something you can use rather than a percentage in a report.

Every project is set up so you can leave. The code is in your repository, the infrastructure is in your accounts, the deployment is scripted and the decisions are written down. If you take the system in-house or hand it to another team, nothing about that should be difficult.

Common questions about custom software development.

How do we know custom software is the right choice?
Usually by pricing the alternative honestly. If a configured off-the-shelf product covers the work with tolerable compromises, that is almost always cheaper to buy and cheaper to run. Custom becomes the better option when the compromises are in the part of the business that differentiates you, or when the manual effort of working around them has become a permanent cost. We are happy to help you make that comparison even if the answer is that you should not build.
What happens if our requirements change during the build?
They will, and the process assumes it. Work is planned in short cycles, so a change affects what is picked up next rather than invalidating a fixed plan agreed months earlier. What we do ask is that changes are traded against something else in scope rather than added on top, so the timeline stays honest.
Who owns the code?
You do, from the beginning. The repository is yours, the cloud accounts are yours, and there is no runtime licence or dependency on us to keep the system running. If you decide to move the work in-house or to another supplier, everything needed to do that already exists.
Can you work with the systems we already have?
Yes, and most projects involve it. Accounting systems, CRMs, payment providers and warehouse tools usually stay where they are; the new system integrates with them through their APIs, or through scheduled imports where no API exists. Replacing everything at once is rarely necessary and always riskier.
