Cloudflare sits between your users and your server, and does several jobs that would otherwise each need their own solution: caching static assets at edge locations worldwide, absorbing malicious traffic before it reaches you, terminating TLS, and providing DNS that does not fall over.
For a site serving users spread across a country or several, the latency improvement from edge caching alone is usually the single largest performance win available.
Why we use it
We put Cloudflare in front of most production sites. Edge caching makes a site in a Mumbai data centre feel local in Guwahati, the WAF absorbs the constant background noise of automated attacks, and DDoS protection is included rather than an emergency purchase.
Its geo headers are also how our analytics know a visitor's country without ever touching an IP-lookup service — privacy that comes free with infrastructure we were using anyway.
