AWS offers the broadest set of managed services of any provider: compute, managed databases, object storage, queues, content delivery and much more, in regions worldwide. For most applications a small subset is all that is needed, and using more than that is usually a mistake rather than sophistication.
Its depth is genuinely useful when a workload has an unusual requirement, and genuinely dangerous when a team adopts services because they exist.
Why we use it
We use AWS where its managed services remove real operational work — managed databases with automated backups, object storage that does not need capacity planning, and content delivery at the edge — and where data residency requirements make its regional coverage decisive.
The discipline it demands is what we bring with it: everything defined in code so environments are reproducible, permissions scoped narrowly rather than granted broadly, and cost reviewed deliberately. AWS bills grow quietly through idle resources, indefinite log retention and instances sized for an imagined peak, and none of that shows up until someone reads the invoice.
