Firebase removes most of the backend work from a mobile project: authentication with social providers, a real-time database that syncs offline, push notifications, crash reporting and analytics all arrive configured.
For a first version, that is weeks saved. The trade-off is a data model shaped by the tool rather than the domain, costs that scale with reads rather than with users, and a migration path that gets harder the longer you wait.
Why we use it
We use Firebase for mobile products that need to reach market quickly, and for the parts it is genuinely best at — push notifications and crash reporting — even in applications whose backend is ours.
We are direct about the ceiling. Once the domain has real relational structure or reporting requirements, we plan the move to a database that suits it. Knowing that in advance makes it a planned migration rather than an emergency.
