Infrastructure configured by hand is infrastructure nobody can reproduce. The staging environment drifts from production, the person who set it up leaves, and rebuilding after an incident becomes archaeology.
Terraform makes the infrastructure a file: reviewed in a pull request, versioned in git, and applied identically to every environment. Recovery becomes a command instead of a memory exercise.
Why we use it
We use Terraform where infrastructure is more than a single server — several environments, cloud resources with relationships between them, anything that must be reproducible.
For a single application on one server, a documented setup script is honest and sufficient. Terraform's value is proportional to how much infrastructure exists and how often it changes; below a threshold it is overhead with a certificate.
