Supabase is Postgres with the scaffolding attached: authentication, row-level security, file storage, real-time subscriptions and an auto-generated API over your schema. For a small team, it removes weeks of backend groundwork without giving up a real relational database.
That last part matters — unlike most backend-as-a-service platforms, you keep proper SQL, constraints and the ability to leave with a standard Postgres dump.
Why we use it
We use Supabase for products that need to move fast and are Postgres-shaped anyway — internal tools, MVPs, applications where real-time subscriptions are central.
We design the schema as we would for any Postgres database, so the exit is always open. Row-level security is powerful and easy to get subtly wrong, so we test authorisation adversarially rather than trusting the policy reads correctly.
