Legal Software Development
Matter, document and deadline management that stands up to scrutiny.
Legal work has two characteristics that shape the software: deadlines that cannot be missed without professional consequence, and confidentiality obligations that are enforceable rather than aspirational.
The volume of documents is the third factor. A single matter can involve thousands of documents in dozens of versions, and knowing which version was sent to whom and when is frequently the question that matters most.
We build matter management, document handling with full audit trails, deadline and limitation tracking, time and billing, and client portals for secure exchange.
Common challenges
What tends to go wrong
-

Conflict checks and information barriers have to be enforced technically, not by policy. A system where access is theoretically restricted but practically available to anyone who knows a URL does not satisfy the obligation.

Deadlines are calculated from rules that vary by jurisdiction and matter type, and they move when other events occur. A calendar entry typed by hand is a single point of failure with serious consequences.

Document provenance matters. Which version was filed, which was sent to the other side, and who had access to what at which point are all questions that get asked, sometimes years later.

How we address it
What we build instead
-

Access restrictions are enforced at the query layer and every access is logged, so an information barrier can be evidenced rather than asserted. Conflict checking runs against the whole record rather than against what the person searching happens to remember.

Deadlines are derived from rules held as data, recalculated when triggering events change, and surfaced with escalating prominence as they approach. The rules are visible and editable by the firm rather than buried in code.

Documents are versioned immutably with a complete access and transmission trail. Nothing is overwritten; a new version supersedes the previous one and both remain retrievable.

Outcomes
What typically improves
-
Deadline tracking stops depending on an individual's diary, and the escalation happens whether or not anyone remembered to set a reminder.

Questions about who saw a document, and which version was sent, have answers that come from the system rather than from a search through email.
